Nothing puts me in a great mood like a well-fitting pair of jeans. If you have more of an hourglass shape like me, you know the struggle when it comes to finding a pair that fits both your waist and your thighs perfectly, which means you also know how flattering a high-waisted pair can be for your figure. I’ve been on board the skinny jeans train for years, and to be honest with you, I’ve never once felt great in them as they’ve always hugged me in all the wrong spots. Needless to say now that the wide-leg denim trend is back for spring and summer, I am truly thriving.
The wide-leg trend makes such a statement on its own given the cut and how structured it is. It’s super versatile and can be dressed up or down, and you know I love a solid desk-to-drinks staple. I’m styling it pretty casually here with a sheer blouse and my work tote, adding a pop of color with a pair of suede pumps that adds a fun element of formality for those nights where I can’t decide if I want to run straight home to watch my latest Netflix binge, or head out for date night or drinks with my girlfriends.
Another thing to be cautious of when buying a pair of wide-leg jeans (especially if you’ve never tried them before), is to make sure the leg is wide but not too wide. Your best bet is to find a pair that is fitted through the hip and thigh with a wide lower leg. That way, it still elongates the leg and flatters your shape while keeping things trendy, like this pair from J. Crew’s Point Sur Collection.
I tend to gravitate more toward a pair that’s cropped right above the ankle with a frayed hem and flattering high-rise waist. It gives the overall vibe of your look a vintage, cool-girl vibe that also boasts an unmatched quality of fit from the past.
Inspired by the laid back nature of the California coast, J. Crew’s Point Sur Collection is seriously speaking to me. The pair I’m wearing in the photos above are from this season’s collection, and they’re going to be in my wardrobe rotation all spring and summer long! I am typically an 8/29 in jeans no matter the brand or style, but I recommend sizing up if you’re leaning toward a pair in this collection. For reference, I’m wearing a size 10/30.
The wide-leg trend doesn’t have to stop at jeans, nor does it. A wide-leg pant on a jumpsuit is just as flattering, and makes for the perfect weekend staple for the warmer months. If you’re going to stick with the jeans though, Free People carries the most beautiful vintage pairs.
Shopbop is my go-to when I’m feeling like adding a little extra ‘oomph’ to my overall look. Sure, they’ve got the staples, too, but when it comes to a statement piece like a wide-leg pair of jeans, you’re already looking to make a splash. Here are some of my favorite not-so-ordinary styles but with a heftier price tag if you’re looking to really invest in some long-term, quality pieces.
